| Closing the technology gap between less fortunate children and their wealthier classmates has become a mission for enGenius’s Armando Cuevas.
Mr. Cuevas, vice president of the State & Local Government Practice at enGenius Consulting Group, volunteers through Computers for Youth, a national non-profit organization whose unique and focused mission is to help low-income middle school students do better in school by providing donated computer systems to improve their home learning environment.
Computers for Youth’s “Take IT Home” partners with local schools, with a goal of providing a free refurbished computer and educational software to all 6th grade students who attend a half-day, Saturday workshop with their parents.
“This helps to diminish the ‘digital divide’ that exists today between less fortunate children and their wealthier counterparts,” Cuevas says. Qualitative research by CFY has shown significant impact in improved math scores, increased effort in class and improved parent confidence in helping their children learn.
He, along with other corporate IT executives in the Atlanta area, volunteers during the school year as a classroom assistant while a master teacher provides training on the computers and educational use of the internet. Typically, 100-150 children are given computer training on any given Saturday throughout the school year.
Mr. Cuevas also chairs the Atlanta CFY chapter’s PC Donation Committee which has a target goal of 1,000+ donated PCs for each school year. In less than two years, over 1,500 students have benefited from the program by having a computer placed in their home.
“We are asking folks that if they know who in their company is responsible for disposing of old/used desktop computers and laptops to please contact us,” Cuevas said. Donated computers are required to have a minimum Pentium 4 processor.
Founded in 1999, Computers for Youth operates programs in Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Atlanta operations were established in October 1997 with an office and refurbishing center. To date on a national level, more than 15,000 families in more than 40 middle schools.
If you wish to donate computers, volunteer your time or make a financial contribution, please contact CFY at http://www.cfy.org/atlanta.php.
